Bhubaneswar, Sept. 26: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has urged the Centre to recruit more tribal youths from Orissa in the defence forces.

Naveen made the demand during a meeting with Union defence minister A.K. Antony at New Delhi yesterday.

The state has been emphasising on providing recruitment for more tribal youths so that they are kept away from Maoist influence. Tribals constitute 22.13 per cent of the state’s total population.
Listing the measures taken to provide jobs to tribals and to increase their employability, the chief minister said his government had started recruiting tribal youths as special police officers for eventual appointment as constables. The state was also setting up industrial training institutes in all tribal blocks.

He said that the state, under the employment mission, was providing special training to tribal youths as per the requirement of the armed forces, so that more youths qualify the recruitment tests.

Patnaik urged Antony to ensure that, if necessary, suitable modification of physical standards are made to facilitate the entry of tribal youths into the Army. Tribal youths in Orissa often fail to meet physical standards like height requirement.

Naveen also demanded setting up of two more branch recruitment offices, one in Koraput and the other at Baripada. At present, three branch recruitment offices are located at Cuttack, Gopalpur and Sambalpur, each catering to 10 districts covering a population of over 1 crore.
Naveen said that Orissa had been sanctioned 405 police personnel for its five coastal police stations and the responsibility for their training rested with the coast guard.

Ford plans to add 1,000 jobs

CHENNAI: The State government and Ford India on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise an investment of $500 million to double the production capacity of the company’s plant at Maraimalai Nagar, about 40 km south of Chennai.

The investment will facilitate the increase of the annual capacity to two lakh cars. The establishment of an engine plant with a capacity of 2.5 lakh is also covered under the expansion plan.

Totally, about 1,000 jobs would be generated, according to a State government press release. M.F. Farooqui, Principal Secretary (Industries), and Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India, signed the MoU at the Secretariat.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin who handles the industry portfolio, president and CEO of Ford Motor Alan Mulally, executive vice-president of Ford Motor (Asia Pacific and Africa) John Parker, U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer, Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi and U.S Consul General in Chennai Andrew T. Simkin were present.

Set up in 1996, the existing plant has been producing models such as Ikon, Endeavour, Fusion and Fiesta, the government release said. It employs about 2,100 persons. Noting that the plant was gearing up for volume production of the Ford Figo next year, a release from the company stated that the construction of the engine plant was well under way. Production will come on stream in 2010. The new engine production facility would transform Maraimalai Nagar into the regional source for small displacement engines, serving not only the Indian market but also the Asia-Pacific and Africa region.

Commonwealth Games will create 1.1 million jobs

New Delhi: The 2010 Commonwealth Games will not just boost sports but also generate
$5 million (approximately Rs24 crore) and create 1.1 million jobs, estimates PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"I have this report by PricewaterhouseCoopers which suggests that revenue of $5 million and 1.1 million jobs will be generated in India during the 2010 Games. The mega event will be the best one ever organised and these reports only add value to our belief," said Suresh Kalmadi, chairman, organising committee of the Commonwealth Games.

For foreign tourists, who will throng the country to participate and watch the event, the city will need more than 40,000 rooms. This will create job opportunities in the hospitality sector," the chairman said.

"Sports training and medicines are spheres that have not been utilised to the fullest in India till now. The Games will help build these sectors as well," Kalmadi said.

Tata Motors jobs will rise after UK announces loan

LONDON: Hopes of new jobs have risen in Britain again after the government announced a loan of 10 million pounds to Tata Motors to manufacture an
electric version of its Indica Vista car in this country.

But a source close to Tata Motors gave a measured response Tuesday, saying there will be "a few" new jobs - and they will be mostly in engineering.

The local media in Britain's Midlands region have expressed hopes of "hundreds of new jobs" at Tata Motors units after the Labour government ended months of delay last week to approve the loan.

Tata Motors will put in 25 million pounds into the venture, which will give Europe its first four-seater electric car with a range of 200 km and an electronically controlled top speed of 104 km per hour.

The loan - which was announced just as British joblessness touched a 14-year-high - was given to the Tata Motors' European Technical Centre (TMETC), based at the University of Warwick.

The Birmingham Post newspaper said the centre employs 180 people in the West Midlands, and job numbers could rise to 441 by 2014. Even more jobs would be created if Tata picks the West Midlands to assemble the new cars, it said.

But a source close to Tata Motors told IANS Tuesday the new jobs will not be in their hundreds.

"A few extra jobs will be created in engineering - but I can't see it being in the hundreds that are being talked about.

"If you look at the money, it is a minor figure - a small part of the pudding. But it's a good thing that this car's being produced for the Western market," the source told IANS.

However, the source confirmed that the new cars will be manufactured "with Jaguar Land Rover", the British marques that are owned by Tata Motors and have important manufacturing facilities in the midlands region.

Tata Motors is yet to give out details of the Indica Vista Electric Vehicle, prompting local speculation about where the facility will be located and what kind of facilities would be needed.

The Birmingham Post said: "It is hoped the move would create a significant number of jobs, both directly and through the supply chain."

Rachel Eade, operations manager at automotive supply chain support body Accelerate, said: "There is no doubt that this money will help the West Midlands continue the 'drive' and should hopefully place us at the forefront of green technology going forward."

Announcing the loan last week, Britain's Business Secretary (minister) Peter Mandelson said the loan will help in "securing and creating high value engineering jobs in the West Midlands".

"Today we are backing Tata as Tata backs Britain," he added.

Speculation about new jobs mounted in a week British unemployment hit a 14-year high at 2.47 million.

So far, Tata Motors has only said that the cars will be developed and manufactured in Britain and expressed appreciation for the government loan.
